Target

Target is a big box store that has been around for a hundred years.  It is typically a one story box with the interior space separated by walls into smaller, more scaled down spaces.

There are main paths that circle the store and cut through the walls.

Target is an innovator is many areas.  For one, the ceiling is dropped down so that the shopping space is approximately 10′-15′ above the floor, helping to scale down the large spaces.  This also leaves less wasted space above the customer and merchandise area.

Target’s are at the forefront of changing their nature to fit into urban environments.  While they are changing their faces in urban environments, their interior spaces aren’t following as quickly.  Target is also a leader in becoming more environmentally friendly; they are one of a few stores on a list to try out a new retail program for LEED.  There are always interested in testing new concepts like glass showcase storefronts, multi-level stores with escalators for carts, and rooftop parking and parking garages.
